Sharjah Souk, UAE

This major construction, located alongside Sharjah's bustling creek, takes the form of two rectangular structures converging on a central meeting area, covered by a large dome.

We were asked to design a mural for the whole of the inside of this 14 metre diameter dome. The design is based on the twelve star signs, the Pole Star, a number of constellations and the Milky Way.

Domes are a common feature of Islamic architecture, not just in the middle east but throughout the world. Craig Bragdy has extensive experience of the complexities of murals for domes. A great deal of knowledge, mathematical as well as artistic, is necessary to achieve the simple and elegant appearance that is often required.
